Podcast: Paul Rogers of AS Roma talks Fan Engagement

Podcast: Paul Rogers of AS Roma talks Fan Engagement
15, September 2017 Donnacha Brennan

Fan Engagement has become such as buzzword, that it is often regarded with skepticism. Far from thinking of it as enabling greater understanding between the fan and his/her club in order to improve and enhance the relationship for both, it is often perceived by the public as just being another cynical ploy clubs use to drive revenue. At Sportego, we know the importance of revenue generation, and that ROI is key to encouraging clubs to invest time, energy and money in digital technology such as our Fanlink platform. However, we have also seen first hand the dramatic and positive effect of good fan engagement on the fan experience, and indeed on their relationship with their club.

For perception to change among the public, it only takes a small number of high profile clubs to embrace fully the digital platforms at their disposal, and other clubs will see the benefits and follow suit. AS Roma are at the very forefront of that movement, drawing plaudits from fans and fan engagement professionals alike for their creative and engaging Digital & Social media strategy, producing innovative content and really connecting with the public through humour and personality. Social media is about news certainly, but it is also about fun. Too often clubs are content to simply push news stories to their audience, without looking to actually entertain those supporters. For those clubs, is very much a monologue, not a dialogue. Not so for AS Roma, thanks in large part to their Head of Digital and Social Media, Paul Rogers.

This week on the Sportego Fan Engagement Podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting to Paul about his opinions on Fan Engagement and why he feels Roma’s strategy has been so well received. He also relays the story of a truly unique moment involving a loyal fan, an oft-injured player and how Roma’s social media department saw the potential of how that could touch the hearts of so many other fans. It is a thoroughly enjoyable conversation and we highly recommend you give it a listen. Thanks so much to Paul for his time and thoughts.
